Argelès marks the start of the Côte Vermeille, where the Pyrenees plunge into the Mediterranean. From the park you quickly reach the coves, the colourful fishing ports and the hinterland, without enduring the coastal traffic.
Beaches & coves
Argelès beach and its vast fine sand are 5 minutes away; the wilder Racou district marks where the rocks begin. Fifteen minutes away the coves of the Côte Vermeille begin: Collioure and its bay, Port-Vendres and its fishing harbour, the Paulilles cove, then Banyuls. Coastal paths and calanques are best discovered on foot or by kayak.
Villages, heritage & mountains
The hinterland is within easy reach: medieval villages of the Roussillon, perched Cathar castles, Romanesque abbeys — most under 30 minutes away. On the mountain side, the Canigó massif rises an hour away, with its mid-mountain hikes, high-altitude lakes and fine coastal trails linking the coves.
Wines, markets & quick access
The region is a vineyard: Banyuls, Maury, Côtes du Roussillon — the cellars open their doors for tasting, and local markets brim with regional produce. For dining, the fish restaurants of the ports are worth the trip. To get around without wasting time, exit 12 'Port-Argelès / Valmy' off the D914 is right by the park.
